Statement on Creative Practice

I have a work-in-progress called History, Re/cord, Trace on one of the walls in my studio. It is a mixed-media drawing and is comprised of fragments from prints, bits of wire, found objects, and vintage domestic linens. I work with fabric that has a history – scraps from garment-making, a hand-made kitchen apron, or vintage tablecloths.

What does it mean to record something? The images I explore – personal objects from everyday life, references to the body and the natural world, scientific diagrams from geology and astronomy, found text, pictographs from ancient sites – evoke memory and history. I hand-dye the fabric and print layers of imagery with relief, monoprint and screenprint methods. As a contemporary artist, I am interested in primary patterns, images of regeneration and continuity, and how these images connect to the idea of “journey,” a kind of metalanguage, traces of human presence across time.
